Because they want to or have to share certain files with a large number of people.

Because sometimes failure to upload/share can result in very slow downloading speeds. As for why some people are dedicated seeders, those individuals are often privy to releases before the rest of the general public and are able to receive said releases quickly and easily. While I rarely use torrents anymore, I generally make a habit to seed for a minimum of 1:1 (although I usually end up at 1:2 or 1:3). In my case, I suppose it has something to do with being polite.

So why let it go to waste when they are already paying for it?? I will seed torrents when I am not using my computer and connection for anything.

Exactly, personally I seed a certain amount of time after downloading to let others have it as well, and if I haven't used up all my bandwidth at the end of the month, and I have nothing else to download I seed a lot to not let it go to waste

I'm more of a leecher myself, but if there are very few seeders or I'm seeding a large amount as my download finishes up, I'll do it indefinitely (or until I need my bandwidth for other things.) There are also times when I'll pull up a torrent I finished and took off long ago and seed it again... but that's not as often as I'd like to say it is.
